A resin bound driveway can completely transform a property.
It can look exceptional, offers an enormous choice of colours and aggregate blends, and, when correctly designed and installed, can provide a durable and attractive outdoor surface for many years.
But there is something every homeowner needs to understand before spending their money:
You aren't just buying resin.
You're buying a complete construction and you're trusting a contractor to get that construction right.
The finished surface may be the part you see, but what you don't see underneath it can make all the difference between a driveway that performs for years and one that develops problems.
Cracking. Movement. Loose aggregate. Standing water. Discolouration. Failed edges.
And when something goes wrong, one of the most expensive mistakes can be discovering that you chose your contractor based on the finished photograph and the price per square metre rather than their practical experience and understanding of the ground beneath your driveway.
This guide is designed to help you avoid that.
1. First things first: what exactly is resin bound?
Before you compare contractors, make sure you're comparing the same thing.
Resin bound and resin bonded are different systems.
With resin bound, selected aggregate is mixed with resin before being laid and trowelled to create the finished surface.
With resin bonded, resin is applied to a prepared surface and aggregate is broadcast into it.
They are different construction methods and shouldn't simply be treated as interchangeable because both are described as “resin”.
So don't simply ask:
“Do you install resin driveways?”
Ask:
“Are you proposing resin bound or resin bonded, and what system are you specifying for my property?”
A professional contractor should be able to give you a clear answer.
2. The biggest mistake: choosing the surface before understanding the ground
This is perhaps the most important point in the entire guide.
A resin bound surface is only one part of the construction.
The ground beneath it needs to provide a stable foundation capable of supporting the loads and conditions it will experience.

Choosing a contractor shouldn't feel like a sales battle.

“This price is only available today.”

“Do I know enough about the person building this driveway to trust them with my money and my property?”
If the answer is yes, you're on the right track.
If the answer is no, keep asking questions.
